After the upheaval at the top of the club and on the coaching bench, Chelsea FC is also repositioning itself in terms of sporting leadership. From February 2023, Laurence Stewart will take over the duties of technical director at the Blues. The Englishman joins from AS Monaco, where he holds the same position and will complete his stint there with the winter transfer window next January. Stewart previously worked, among other things, as Red Bull’s scouting manager for the soccer locations in Leipzig, Salzburg, New York and Bragança Paulista.
At Chelsea, Marina Granovskaya had the sporting decision-making power until Roman Abramovich sold the club to the US investors led by Todd Boehly. Since her and Petr Cech’s departure, Boehly has been handling the transfers on an interim basis, before Stewart there was also interest in Salzburg’s sporting director Christoph Freund and in Christopher Vivell, who was technical director at RB Leipzig until recently. According to media reports, Southampton chief scout Joe Shields will also move to Stamford Bridge after the Monaco sports director.
Chelsea owner Boehly recently stated that he wanted a global model for the Londoners along the lines of Red Bulls or the City Football Group. With Stewart he has now committed a man who has already had experience with one.
