The midfielder worked for several years in the top German division. Now Sergei Mandreko has died – years ago he was diagnosed with a serious illness.

The Austrian first division soccer team Rapid Wien mourns the loss of long-time Bundesliga professional Sergej Mandreko. “Unfortunately, we received very sad news this afternoon. At the age of only 50, Sergei Mandreko passed away today after a long and serious illness,” the club said on Twitter. Mandreko, who was born in what is now Tajikistan, was diagnosed with the nervous disease ALS in 2017.

Mandreko was under contract with the Viennese from 1992 to 1997. He then moved to Germany and played a total of 67 appearances in the Bundesliga and 26 games in the second division for Hertha BSC and VfL Bochum until 2003.
