Desiree van Lunteren is in her last weeks as a professional football player. The 29-year-old former player of Ajax, AZ and Telstar will stop after this season to spend more time with her family.

“It was a difficult decision, but it’s enough,” said Van Lunteren via Instagram. “I want to spend more time with my family and focus on a social career. I played at the highest level for thirteen years. I played at several beautiful clubs, won great prizes and experienced many highlights. It’s time to say goodbye and do new fun things.”

Stopped at Oranje at 26

After the lost World Cup final in 2019, the PSV player already stopped working for the Dutch national team. She no longer had the motivation to commit one hundred percent for Orange. Two years earlier, she became European champion in her own country with the national team.

Van Lunteren started at AZ in 2009. After that she played for Telstar, Ajax, SC Freiburg, again Ajax and PSV. She won the national title and the KNVB Cup with AZ. At Ajax, the attacking midfielder became champion twice and won the cup three times.

In December 2020, Van Lunteren gave birth to her son Daan.
