Ronald Beimers, the first party leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV) in Drenthe, has died at the age of 52. He had been suffering from lung cancer for several years.
Beimers was from 2011 party leader of the Drenthe branch of the PVV. In the provincial elections in Drenthe in the same year, the party won 4 seats. As a newcomer, Beimers felt the big winner with the PVV. “When I look at all those volunteers, all those people who have helped us. It’s just fantastic,” he said after the election results.
Nevertheless, the PVV, which argued in the election campaign for change in Drenthe, had to settle for a role in the opposition. The board was eventually formed by PvdA and VVD. Both parties had the smallest possible majority: 21 of the 41 seats.
In 2013, Beimers announced his departure from the PVV. He said he wanted to make more time for his family and work. Beimers was succeeded at the PVV in Drenthe by current party chairman Nico Uppelschoten.
