Former international Wim Jansen passed away – NH Nieuws

Former football player Wim Jansen has passed away. The former Feyenoord and Ajax player suffered from Alzheimer’s. Jansen turned 75 years old.

Jansen played 476 official games in Feyenoord’s shirt and won the European Cup with that club in 1970. Jansen also played 65 international matches for the Orange squad (one goal) and played in the lost World Cup finals of 1974 and 1978.

In 1980 Jansen left for America where he played a season for the Washington Diplomats together with Johan Cruijff. On his return to the Netherlands, Jansen chose Ajax and that was not appreciated by the Feyenoord supporters. For example, on his return to the Rotterdam Kuip an ice ball thrown at his eye which prevented him from finishing the game.

After his career as a football player, Jansen became a trainer. For example, he was at the helm of Feyenoord, Lokeren and Celtic. He became champion with the Scottish superpower in 1998. With Feyenoord, Jansen won the KNVB Cup twice as a coach in 1991 and 1992. Since 2005, Jansen has held various positions within Feyenoord, such as that of technical director and youth trainer.
