Albert Voß played for Werder Bremen for six years. Now the former Bundesliga keeper has died at the age of 74.
SV Werder Bremen has to cope with a painful loss: Albert Voß is dead. The former Bundesliga goalkeeper died at the age of 74.
The East Frisian native from Ihlowerfehn came to the Weser from VfB Oldenburg in 1975 and spent six years there. However, as a substitute goalkeeper behind regular goalkeeper Dieter Burdenski, Voß only made one Bundesliga appearance: on November 26, 1977, he was between the posts in a 2-1 defeat in Kaiserslautern. He was allowed to play much more often in the 1980/81 second division season – he played eight games in that season and thus contributed to direct promotion.
Werder President and Chairman of the Supervisory Board Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald paid tribute to the deceased: “Albert Voß came to Werder because he was considered one of the best goalkeepers in northern Germany in the 1970s,” the president is quoted as saying in a club press release. Voß remained loyal to the club because he could have represented Burdenski at any time. “Dieter Burdenski knew that he could never rest. That played a crucial role in his development into a national player,” said Hess-Grunewald.
In 1981 Voß left Bremen – although coach Otto Rehhagel wanted to keep him. The keeper returned to VfB Oldenburg, a decision he later regretted. “Not a good decision,” said Voß himself looking back. Just one year later, he moved on to VfL Brake before ending his career at other lower-class clubs. He then embarked on a new career as an insurance salesman.
Voß maintained contact with his former employer until the end. Just a few years ago he visited the Weserstadion with his daughter – at the invitation of the management. He was visibly impressed by the club’s development, Werder officials wrote in a press release.
