A former foreman of the depot of a parcel service in Meppel has been sentenced to prison by the court in Assen for smuggling suitcases full of hemp. Each time a trolley case with about 5 kilos of drugs was sent by post from Spain to the Netherlands.
According to the court, the suspect (31) from Zwolle took the suitcases with hemp from the depot during his work at DPD in Meppel and then took them to an unknown destination with a delivery van. This happened several times between May 31, 2021 and June 29, 2021. “For several months, he and others have been guilty of importing soft drugs from Spain, destined for Germany.”
Drug crime
The court believes that the man has contributed to an organized form of drug crime that has taken on major forms in our country and is associated with serious, often violent crime and illegal money flows. He is also largely blamed for seriously betraying the confidence that the parcel company placed in him.
Two years ago, the company in Meppel called in a detective agency after five sealed trolley cases disappeared in a short period of time without anyone complaining. A sixth suitcase was intercepted, it turned out to contain 5 kilos of hemp. The resident of Zwolle then reported to the depot with a friend from Meppel. He claimed that a package from Spain with luxury items had not arrived. It was about the drug package.
Eight months in prison
According to the court, camera images also show that the suspect put trolley suitcases aside on various dates in the previous period and then took them with him. The resident of Zwolle has been sentenced to eight months in prison, half of which is conditional.
His friend from Meppel (24) is seen as a co-suspect with a smaller role. He was sentenced to 100 hours community service and a month’s suspended prison sentence.
