Former football player Van den Broek finds punishment for spitting Volendam player Oristanio justified

Benjamin van den Broek played football in the Netherlands for HFC Haarlem, FC Den Bosch and Telstar. Since he retired, he has been on the disciplinary committee that decides the penalties for red cards. This is also the case in the case of FC Volendam’s spitting Gaetano Oristanio. Van den Broek explains tonight in De Kick-off that the suspension of four games is reasonable. “It concerns two criminal offenses: the violation and the spitting.”

Van den Broek thinks it is important that the disciplinary committee not only includes people who are well-versed in law. “You are there with your knowledge as a former player. You can make a difference in some cases,” said 35-year-old Van den Broek.

The other guest at the table is Marius Wiegeman, reporter for AZ Fanpage. Oristanio received his red card AZ’s away match against FC Volendam (1-1) when he hit Jordy Clasie from behind. Then a phlegm flew from the Italian in the direction of the arbiter. “I can live with that suspension, although I believe Oristanio did not want to hit the referee.”
