Former BVB stars get FC Barcelona on course

FC Barcelona has regained fourth place in the Spanish football league. Two ex-BVB stars played a crucial role.

The Catalans defeated Athletic Bilbao 4-0 (1-0) on Sunday evening and passed champions Atlético Madrid again, who had beaten Celta Vigo 2-0 the day before. It was Barca’s tenth straight La Liga game without defeat.

Former BVB professionals Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (37th) and Ousmane Dembélé (73rd) put Barca, who now like Atlético at 45 points, on course.

Aubameyang now has four goals in four league games since joining Barcelona from Arsenal in the winter transfer window. The 32-year-old scored another goal for Barca in the Europa League.

The Dutchman Luuk de Jong, once unlucky under contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach, increased against Bilbao in the 90th minute, his compatriot Memphis Depay (90 + 4) put the final point.

Real Madrid remain unchallenged in first place

At the top of the table, record champions Real Madrid continue to circle undisturbed with 60 points.

The Royals won 1-0 (0-0) on Saturday through the goal of world champion Karim Benzema (83rd) at the board club Rayo Vallecano.

Sevilla FC follow six points behind, beating third-placed and city rivals Betis (46) 2-1 (2-0) in the derby on Sunday.
