Former Bundesliga professional Thomas Delaney has been playing for FC Copenhagen since 2024. The current season could end dramatically for him and the Danish club.

FC Copenhagen is having a season to forget. On the last matchday of the main round, the Danish record champions slipped into the relegation round – a historic low point for the club.

After the decisive 1:2 against FC Randers, Thomas Delaney found clear words. The leading player said: “I’m ashamed of myself. I’m damn ashamed,” said the former Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund player. Coach Jacob Neestrup explained on TV2: “It’s a black day, it’s embarrassing – and it’s deserved.” Like the two-time national player Youssoufa Moukoko, Delaney was only used as a joker.

With the ninth defeat in the 22nd game of the season, it is clear that FCK will have to go into the relegation round of the Superliga for the first time. Delaney said: “It’s my fault. It’s our fault. It’s so bad. We didn’t meet expectations. We didn’t even meet the minimum fucking standards.”

TV expert and ex-HSV professional Stig Töfting spoke of a “scandal”. The most loyal fans protested with numerous banners against the “overpaid” team and the club management. A banner read: “It’s all your fault – shame on you!”

Last season, Copenhagen celebrated their 16th championship title, their sixth in ten years. Now it was only enough for seventh place. The last time Copenhagen were this bad was in 1999/2000, when they finished eighth. Moukoko also fell short of expectations with three goals in 18 league games.

In the Champions League they were only one point short of making it to the play-offs. However, the season is not completely lost. The lead over the penultimate Silkeborg IF is ten points, and relegation is considered unlikely. FCK is also in the cup semi-finals and will play the second leg against Viborg FF on Saturday. The first leg ended 2-1.
