Former Ajax boss Marc Overmars banned for a year in the Netherlands

Misconduct at Ajax

Former Dutch international Marc Overmars has been banned from working in Dutch football for a year because of cross-border behavior. The country’s media reported unanimously on Thursday about a corresponding ruling by the Dutch sports court ISR. The ban therefore applies immediately. A further year was suspended for two years.

The ban has no impact on Overmars’ work in Belgium, where the 50-year-old works as technical director at Royal Antwerp FC. Overmars could only face a ban there if the Dutch association forwards the verdict to the world association FIFA. Overmars, who once played for Arsenal and FC Barcelona, had sent messages to employees during his time as sports director at Ajax Amsterdam that “crossed the boundaries,” as the club put it at the beginning of 2022.

“This behavior is unacceptable, especially for someone in my position,” Overmars said at the time. He therefore resigned from Ajax in February 2022, and a little over a month later he joined Antwerp. His successor in Amsterdam was the now released Sven Mislintat, who previously worked for VfB Stuttgart.
