Foreign Minister Baerbock urges the importation of products from forced labor

Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock urges an EU import ban on products made with forced labor.

A corresponding ban on European companies must also apply to foreign companies that want to sell products on the European market, said the Green politician of the German Press Agency. "And so the European Parliament’s proposal to ban the import of goods manufactured using forced labor is, in my opinion, exactly right."

The European Parliament had already spoken in March for an import ban on products made by slave labor. In September, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen endorsed this proposal.

Such an import ban could affect products from the Chinese region of Xinjiang. The Chinese leadership is accused of using Muslim Uyghurs there as slave labor. China dismisses the allegations as "lying" back. In the USA, President Joe Biden had already enacted a law to restrict the import of products from Xinjiang shortly before Christmas. (Dpa)
