Cologne (dpa) – For Steffen Baumgart, 1. FC Köln does not yet have the same importance as his former clubs Union Berlin or SC Paderborn.
“I went through very difficult times with Union and Paderborn. So far I’ve been lucky not to have had a difficult time with FC,” said the FC coach in an interview with the “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger”.
That’s why he doesn’t want to become a member of 1. FC Köln like he did with Union. “There’s a bit more to it,” said Baumgart. At Union he also “didn’t become a member in the first year, but in the third”. Already in his first season in Cologne he led the former elevator team in the European Cup. Even before the last day of the game on Saturday, the Cologne team have secured the Conference League. With a win at VfB Stuttgart on Saturday, participation in the Europa League is still possible.
“It’s easy to say now that the FC coach is good. But we’ll wait and see whether he’s still good if things don’t go well,” said Baumgart, who is in his first year in Cologne “almost everything was positive”.
