For a good cause or your own wallet: That’s how much money celebrity auctions brought in

Celebs and their fans are imaginative when it comes to quirky auctions on eBay and other platforms. Therefore, this list does not claim to be complete – it is also possible that higher sales prices have already been achieved.

10th place: $575 for Mariah Carey’s legs

At number 10 in our ranking of the most expensive celebrity auctions is a copy of singer Mariah Carey’s legs. She had them made herself and auctioned them off on eBay for a good cause. The proceeds of $575 went to poor children in New York, according to RP Online.

9th place: 7,500 euros for Jürgen Klopp’s old car

According to eBay Magazin, football coach Jürgen Klopp’s old “Mini Cooper” was significantly more expensive: He drove the car while he was coaching in Mainz and it was initially offered for 4,000 euros in 2019. After there was great interest in the vehicle with a real “Kloppo scratch” on the market, the price was increased to 7,500 euros – and the owner changed hands at this price.

8th place: Britney Spears chewing gum for a five-figure price

According to the Munich evening newspaper, a used piece of chewing gum from singer Britney Spears brought in the equivalent of around 12,700 euros in 2004. Incidentally, this is not the only Spears auction: in recent years she is said to have offered cigarette butts, a bath towel, used soap and her hair on eBay. For the latter (starting bid: one million US dollars), she is said not to have found a buyer.

7th place: Scarlett Johansson’s handkerchief

As the Süddeutsche Zeitung reports, Scarlett Johansson, who had a cold, was asked during a TV show in 2008 to blow his nose into a handkerchief – which was auctioned off on eBay for the equivalent of around 3,800 euros as part of the show for a good cause. There were 83 commandments for the handkerchief.

The same show also sold the actress herself – or a 20-minute date with her. This offer went over the auction table at a selling price of around 22,000 euros.

6th place: John Lennon’s rotten tooth for around 23,000 euros

A rotten tooth from John Lennon in 2011 was only slightly more expensive than the date with Johansson. The tooth was auctioned off to a dentist by a British woman for the equivalent of around 23,000 euros. Lennon is said to have given the Beatle tooth to his housekeeper while he was alive T-online reported.

5th place: Justin Bieber’s used frosted glass priced at £66,000

RP Online reports a similarly unhygienic auction: In 2016, a used and unwashed frosted glass by singer Justin Bieber was auctioned on eBay in Great Britain. The starting bid was 10 British pounds, the glass from which Bieber allegedly drank was sold for 66,000 British pounds – the equivalent of around 72,000 euros.

4th place: Niall Horan’s leftovers for more than 90,000 euros

In 2012, a bitten sandwich with a typical Australian spread was auctioned: As Promiflash reports, One Direction singer Niall Horan had to try it during a TV show and didn’t like it, then the rest was sold on eBay for the equivalent of more than 90,000 euros. The proceeds went to the non-profit association ‘YoungCare’, which supports young people in need of care.

3rd place: The Pope’s car – proceeds of 189,000 euros

The old car of the newly elected Pope Benedict XVI was significantly more expensive again in 2005: According to RP Online, this was the auction with the most clicks on eBay in the same year, with over 8.4 million page views. After a 10-day auction, the vehicle was finally sold for around 189,000 euros.

2nd place: New Year’s Eve with Paris Hilton for 200,000 euros

A New Year’s Eve with hotel heiress Paris Hilton was worth even more to a buyer than the Pope’s car: she donated the proceeds of 200,000 euros to a good cause.

1st place: piece of evidence – Michael Jackson’s underwear for around 900,000 euros

The most expensive celebrity auction in our ranking is morally questionable: an old pair of Calvin Klein underpants from Michael Jackson for the equivalent of 907,000 euros – the auction item had previously been evidence in investigations against the singer, who has since died and who had been accused of child abuse.

James Blunt auctioned trip with sister

However, the final sale price of what is probably the most bizarre eBay auction is unknown: singer James Blunt had his sister’s promotion auctioned under the keyword “damsel in distress”. This probably had to fly to Ireland for a funeral, but did not get a flight. According to RP Online, the winner was a helicopter pilot who flew Blunt’s sister to the funeral.

These offers found no buyer

According to T-online, an Xbox 360 signed by Republican US politician Sarah Palin should cost one million euros on eBay – a fan had had it signed and posted it on the Internet. The game console, which cost around 200 euros without a signature, could not be sold. Also, no buyer was found for a place in the tomb of Marilyn Monroe – the starting bid of around 4.6 million US dollars was too high for interested parties, as reported by the Munich evening newspaper.
