The soccer World Cup in Qatar has a special beer policy.

According to the international football association Fifa, alcoholic beer is only sold near stadiums and in fan areas. The beer sold inside the stadiums is non-alcoholic.

Drinks containing percentages are available around the stadiums only before the match and after the final whistle. During the matches, alcoholic beer is sold only in the area of ​​the official “fan festival” organized in the center of Doha.

– Spectators who have bought a ticket inside the stadium can buy non-alcoholic beer. At the Fifa fan festival, beer can be bought from 6:30 p.m. onwards, Fifa announced.

The practice is based on Qatar’s strict alcohol legislation.

The main religion of the country is Islam, where the use of alcohol is prohibited. In Qatar, alcohol is only sold in hotel restaurants and bars that have a liquor license.

Consuming alcohol elsewhere is illegal. However, Qatar relaxed its alcohol laws for the duration of the 29-day World Cup tournament.

According to ESPN since February 2021, companies have been sold ticket packages that promise various alcoholic beverages in connection with the food service.

Qatar is not the first tournament organizer to change its alcohol policy because of football. Brazil gave an exception for the 2014 World Cup to sell alcohol in stadiums.
