The Colts have to improvise at their key position – and are considering a spectacular name. Former quarterback Philip Rivers could make a surprise NFL comeback.
For quarterback Daniel Jones, the season is over after a ruptured Achilles tendon, replacement Riley Leonard is suffering from knee problems, so the Indianapolis Colts are looking for solutions. According to ESPN, the National Football League (NFL) club is working on an emergency plan with Philip Rivers, although the 44-year-old (!) ended his career after the 2020/21 season.
The background is the tense personnel situation at the quarterback position. Daniel Jones tore his Achilles tendon last Sunday in the 19:36 loss to Jacksonville, and on Monday head coach Shane Steichen confirmed that the 28-year-old was out of the season. Jones recently played with a broken fibula and now needs surgery. Substitute Riley Leonard is also struggling with knee problems.
As ESPN reports, Rivers is scheduled to train in Indianapolis on Tuesday. A decision should then be made about a possible commitment. The experienced playmaker played for the San Diego and Los Angeles Chargers for 16 years before retiring before playing for the Colts for one season in 2020/21.
After a successful start to the current season, Indianapolis has recently lost three games in a row. In the AFC North, the team is only in third place with a record of 8:5 behind the Jacksonville Jaguars (9:4) and the Houston Texans (8:5). The next important game is on Sunday (10:25 p.m. CET) against the Seattle Seahawks – a landmark encounter with a view to the play-offs.
