“The position of director of top football at KNVB is a difficult one,” says Wijffels in the AD Football podcast. “We have spoken with Marcel Brands in the past, but he is looking for the dynamics of club football. Men like Van Gaal are not interested. So it is very difficult to make a list of names for that position.”
As difficult as it is to make a list, the name Nigel de Jong will not have been on it for many. “But let’s give De Jong the benefit of the doubt. He knows top football. Know what internationals need to perform. Han Berger should guide him in this role. Let’s see.”
