Kyren Lacy’s plan was to play in the NFL. Now the wide receiver is dead. His last months have been a roller coaster of feelings.
A chase by the police ended last weekend in the tragic death of an emerging football player. Kyren Lacy is said to have committed suicide in the night from Saturday to Sunday in Houston (Texas). The wide receiver, which was on the field for the Louisiana State University (LSU) for three years, was only 24 years old.
According to the authorities, the police are said to have received a call to a female family member of Lacy on Saturday evening. Apparently he had fired into the ground with a firearm as part of a dispute. When the police arrived, however, Lacy was missing any trace. He had already fled from the scene in a car.
A police unit Lacy is said to have discovered around 20 minutes later. The officials wanted to stop his car, but the athlete fled again. A chase over several kilometers began. This ended when Lacy built an accident. The officials then approached the vehicle, but found the athlete dead. He had apparently committed suicide. A gunshot wound pointed out that he apparently inflicted himself.
Lacy’s death triggered great dismay – especially with his own family. Father Kenny Lacy wrote on Facebook: “Our life has changed forever and that will never be fine, but God needed my baby more than it was needed here.” He emphasized that the death of his son had to be “the biggest pill that our families had to swallow”, but was still optimistic that “love and compassion in our families will bring us through.”
What Kenny Lacy appealed: the topic of mental health. “Young parents, starts talking to your children early on and ensures that they are brave and entrust yourself,” he said, emphasizing that mental illnesses are real, but mostly not visible. “Don’t ignore the signs, even if they may seem so small,” said Kenny Lacy.
Meanwhile, the LSU mourned around Kyren Lacy. In a statement it said: “We are sad about the tragic death of the former LSU football student Kyren Lacy.” And further: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his relatives as well as his former teammates and trainers who are affected by his death.”
Lacy’s past months had also been a roller coaster ride of feelings away from the chase that ended in his death. On December 19, 2024, he had registered for the NFL Draft, the selection process of new players in American football, for the 2025 season of the NFL season – and that only two days after he was said to be involved in a car accident with serious consequences.
On December 17, 2024, Lacy is said to have caused that crash. A 78-year-old man was killed. Lacy subsequently committed driver flight. It was only about a month later, on January 12, 2025, that he stood up to the police and was imprisoned. However, he was released against a deposit of $ 151,000.
LACY was charged with negligent killing, drivers and ruthless driving of a vehicle, as can be seen from documents from the Sheriff office Lafourche Parish in Louisianne. On Monday, a jury should have started hearing evidence around Lacy’s case.
