Football during the Occupation: how a (yellow) black “Flemish Elftal” took the place of the Red Devils.

Never was football more popular than during the occupation (1940-1944). Although the war confused the competition and international football, the stadiums were packed. The Red Devils were obliged to be inactive, but a (yellow) black ‘Flemish Elftal’ played against German teams in their place. That would make the Flemish internationals sour after the war, writes Kurt Deswert in his new book.
