“I didn’t know, you explain it to me?”. “Simple: for the moment they cannot participate in qualifications, but we hope that things will change and that peace can be reached, so they can be readmitted”. “Hey, it would be a good incentive, right? We want this war to end, they are dying 5,000 people a week …”. The war, easily intuitive, is the one in Ukraine, and the dialogue took place two days ago in the White House respectively between the presidents of the United States and Fifa Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino during the first meeting of the Task Force for the organization of the 2026 World Cup. The object of the discussion is the ban on participating in international competitions imposed on Russia since, in 2022, he invaded the state: Trump. He was aware of it, and Infantino hinted that the end of the conflict could somehow lead to the reintegration of Karpin’s team in the qualifying cauldron. The president of FIFA is not the first time he touches the topic – “Trump has never asked me to readman Russia, I believe that when we talk about peace there are more important topics than football, but we want all nations to play”, this in February -, and it is difficult to say whether it actually can oil the peace process. Trump believes in it, a little everyone hopes how they hope that the war will end, certainly could have, in respite that occurred, a remarkable symbolic value. The ball that stops cannons?
