Taylor Hawkins is dead. The Foo Fighters drummer has died aged 50. The cause of death is still unknown.

“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and unexpected loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins,” read the band’s official statement. “His musical spirit and infectious laugh will live on with us forever.”

The Foo Fighters are currently on tour in South America. Her next performance would have been at the Estéreo Picnic Festival in Bogotá, Colombia. How the group will continue is completely unclear.

Hawkins joined the Foo Fighters as a regular drummer in 1997 while recording The Color and the Shape. Band boss Dave Grohl described him a little later as “the best friend and partner in crime”. With the Foo Fighters, he also occasionally took on the job of singing, as in the 2005 single “Cold Day in the Sun”. Most recently, Hawkins starred in the Foo Fighters comedy Studio 666, in which he portrayed himself – a sunny drummer who is caught off guard by a demonic menace.
