SG Flensburg-Handewitt ended their small crisis in results in the handball Bundesliga with a passionate performance. The Schleswig-Holsteiners defeated champions Füchse Berlin on Thursday evening in a goal spectacle with 40:39 (22:22).
The celebrated man after the final siren was the German national player Marko Grgic, who blocked Berlin’s last throw by Mathias Gidsel one second before the end. This win against the defending champions was so important after the previous draw against VfL Gummersbach and the defeat at TBV Lemgo Lippe. SG coach Ales Pajovic’s team underlined their ambitions for a Champions League place on matchday 16.
Northern rival THW Kiel had already prevailed at home against TVB Stuttgart on Wednesday evening – albeit with a lot of effort.
Serenade for Pytlick, whistles for Krickau
The SG fans reacted very decisively before kick-off. There were whistles for Füchse coach Nicolej Krickau, who trained Flensburg from summer 2023 to December 2024; for the capital city residents collectively insulting songs. His own man, backcourt player Simon Pytlick, received a happy birthday serenade on the occasion of his 25th birthday – even though the Danish national player had disappointed many handball fans in the border region.
The Olympic champion, who only extended his contract with the SG until 2030 in April, drew a contract clause a few weeks ago and will move to the Spree in the summer of 2027. At latest! A change next summer seems very possible. The question of how much the capital club wants to spend will be decided by the fact that its top star Gidsel and his friend Pytlick form the backcourt force in the half positions a year earlier – just like in the Danish national team.
Lasse Möller makes a comeback – Pytlick outstanding
The SG supporters became loud after five minutes when backcourt player Lasse Möller was back in action for the three-time German champions for the first time after breaking his metacarpal hand. It was 4:4 at that point. It was immediately a duel of equals with changing leads. Pytlick made it 13:11 (17th) with his fifth goal.
The Berliners, where playmaker Nils Lichtlein made his comeback after groin problems, simply couldn’t get the two-time world champion under control afterwards. Pytlick duped the Füchse defense with extremely quick deceptions. He scored eight goals (scoring rate: 73 percent) in the first half. The spectators were treated to a goal spectacle. At halftime the SG was leading 22:22 – that’s sometimes a final result even today.
Dramatic final phase in Flensburg
Pajovic started the second period with a new man between the posts: Benjamin Buric replaced the Dane Kevin Möller (save rate: 12 percent). It was the Bosnian’s 300th Bundesliga game. Driven by their own fans, the hosts turned a 26:28 (38th) lead into a 33:31 lead (45th). And they continued their run: Shortly afterwards, Grgic slammed the ball into the top right corner of the goal, Domen Novak made it 36:32 – Krickau took a timeout.
Grgic saves the SG’s victory
Four minutes before the end of the game, from the North Germans’ point of view, the score was only 39:37. The SG responded strongly: Lasse Möller scored at the front, and at the back Buric parried a throw from Matthes Langhoff. Was that the decision? No, because Kent Robin Tönnesen slipped the ball out of his hands and Aitor Arino hit the empty SG goal. Tönnesen lost the ball, but Grgic blocked Gidsel’s last throw.
Shortly afterwards, the SG fans chanted “Flensburg is much more beautiful than Berlin”. The most successful SG player was Pytlick with eleven goals.
