British R’n’B girl group FLO have released a collaborative song with Missy Elliott. “Fly Girl” celebrates girls’ night out, good looks, self-esteem and having fun. Tajana Tokyo directed the associated music video. She previously produced one for Apple Music, among others Trailers at Rihanna’s halftime show at this year’s Superbowl.

Missy Elliott said of the collaboration that she really likes the group’s authentic ’90s look and sound. She also feels that her song “Work It”, released on the 2002 album UNDER CONSTRUCTION, served as a spiritual template. The trio of Renée Downer, Jorja Douglas, and Stella Quaresma also wanted to pay tribute to Elliott with the title. With their debut album SUPA DUPA FLY, released in 1997, they made the term “fly” socially acceptable.

FLO reinvent the girl group

FLO formed in 2020 and immediately achieved respectable success with their first single “Cardboard Box”, which was released in April 2022, including classic girl group charm and 90s aesthetics. In July they released their first EP THE LEAD. She secured them the Rising Stars award at this year’s BRIT Awards.

The single “Hide & Seek (FLO REMIX)” was released in 2023, a reinterpretation of the title of the same name from the current album by UK rapper Stormzy THIS IS WHAT I MEAN. Her first studio album is scheduled for release in 2023. However, nothing is known about the title, production or the release date of the project.

Missy Elliott was last featured on a song with Skrillex and Mr. Oizo, “RATATA”, in February. She is also nominated to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in May. Just in time for the 25th anniversary of their debut.
