“This involves five flights in total, with approximately 1,200 passengers,” KLM told NH. This morning there was still talk that the flights would depart with a delay, but they have now been removed from the flight schedule.

The decision was made because the American aviation authorities urgently advise people to avoid the airspace of Venezuela and Curaçao.

The flights that were en route from the Antilles and nearby islands and areas arrived safely in Amsterdam, KLM reports. The route has been adjusted for a number of other destinations.

“KLM is closely monitoring the situation and puts the safety of its passengers and employees first. We advise travelers to continue to follow the current flight information.”

TUI and Corendon flights have also been cancelled

Travel organization TUI has announced that there will be no flights to Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire today. “Today’s three scheduled flights have been cancelled. We are closely monitoring the situation and as soon as there is more clarity, a decision will be made about tomorrow’s flights,” a spokesperson said. “It goes without saying that the safety of our passengers and crew always comes first.”

Corendon has also canceled today’s flight to the area.

Venezuela tensions

The companies took this decision after attacks by the United States on Venezuela. Current President Nicolás Maduro is said to have been captured. Several air strikes have been carried out on targets in the South American country.

The holidaymakers who are currently staying in Curaçao and cannot fly back today are accommodated on site, the situation on the island is calm.
