SG Flensburg-Handewitt celebrated a resounding victory in the Handball Bundesliga on Friday evening: The Schleswig-Holsteiners won against MT Melsungen 40:30 (19:15) and thus celebrated their third win in a row.
Coach Ales Pajovic’s team also regained second place in the table with two points. With their win against VfL Gummersbach, the Füchse Berlin had moved past Flensburg the day before.
The SG didn’t let anything go against Melsungen and the MT didn’t have the slightest chance. Emil Jakobsen was the best thrower of the game with nine hits.
Horgen extends until 2028
The Schleswig-Holsteiners had already announced good news before kick-off: right winger Aksel Horgen has extended his contract for another two years. “I feel the trust of those in charge and feel very comfortable in Flensburg – in the team, in the club and above all with our fans,” said the Norwegian, who has been wearing the SG jersey since 2023.
Flensburg was highly focused from the start
The Pajovic team quickly created further feelings of happiness on the pitch. With Jakobsen’s 2-1 win (3rd), Flensburg took the lead for the first time. And it was the Dane who expanded this (7:5/11.). After a quarter of an hour, the SG picked up the pace again: Domen Novak scored to make it 11:8 (17th).
Five minutes before half-time, Melsungen’s Dainis Kristopans was shown a red card. After a hard collision, the referee duo looked at the pictures again and then sent the Latvian off the field. Just a minute later it was Lasse Möller who increased the score to 17:13.
Volz ensures the final score
The lead was four goals at halftime. Could Melsungen come back again? Not with these Flensburg people. Led by captain Johannes Golla, the home team kept the tempo high and punished their opponents’ mistakes coldly. Less than seven minutes had been played after the break when Novak had already scored to make it 25:17.
Melsungen didn’t let themselves down, but the Hessians – certainly also because Kristopans was missing – didn’t have the quality to come back. At the end, Thilo Knutzen was also able to celebrate. The youngster scored 37:28 (57th). With the final siren, Patrick Volz ensured that the team won by ten goals.
