Flemming thought he would never win Edison again: ‘Afraid it would be cursed’

Flemming Viguurs is still over the moon a day after the Edisons presentation. After two years of futile nominations, the 27-year-old singer from Den Bosch was finally allowed to receive an Edison. “When they said I was the winner, I went completely crazy,” Flemming said on the Omroep Brabant program Afslag Zuid.

The young singer dropped his head in his hands in relief on Monday evening when he heard his name. Not Son Mieux, not Duncan Laurence, but Flemming can call himself the best pop artist of 2024. “I already had three nominations, so I was afraid there was a curse on it and I would never win. So it was really a release.”

According to the jury, Flemming is a born pop artist. He already attracted full houses when he performed as lead singer with the Schijndel band Baby Blue. Two years ago he broke through with his own music and since then he has been an indispensable part of the charts. Last year his songs were streamed more than sixty million times.

“It is truly an honor that this will go down in history.”

Yet Flemming still cannot believe that he won against the two other nominated artists. “It is a professional jury and it looks at music, but it is also a matter of taste. You love it or you hate it,” he laughs. “So it still has to land. I’m still floating a bit, but I’m very happy that it worked out.”

The singer has had a lot of luck lately. In December he sold out the large concert hall AFAS Live twice. Last month he became the first in the Netherlands to win a diamond record, because his debut album ‘Flemming’ has been streamed more than 200 million. And now he also has an Edison in his trophy case. “It is truly an honor that this will go down in history,” concludes Flemming.
