It is not a figure of speech, but the flag can literally be hoisted in the Stefanus Church in Beilen. In any case, the job has become a lot easier for the sexton.
“We used to have to climb all the way to the top of the church tower. There was a small hatch from which the flag was hoisted. It was even higher than the rooster on the tower,” says sexton Bas Ploeg.
But twenty years ago the church council thought this was too dangerous an expedition for the sexton. First the stairs were restored, but now it was time for a brand new system to display the flag on the usual days.
“It is now possible with a simple movement,” Ploeg explains. “We made this extension system especially tailor-made for this church. This way the flag flutters beautifully in the wind.”
