Almost two months after FKA Twigs sued the twigs – on the grounds that the indie band had sent them several warnings about the trademark law associated with their stage name -, The twin sisters Laura Good and Linda Good are now fighting back with trademark lawsuits.
The Grammy-winning artist, whose real name is Tahliah Barnett, filed a lawsuit against the duo in March. She claimed that the two had been aware of her use of the name FKA Twigs since 2013. In an email exchange, Barnett reportedly offered the band $15,000 so that their respective musical entities could “coexist” – without having to buy the name from them. According to the lawsuit, “Laura and Linda declined and emphasized that they did not agree to this proposed coexistence.”
Then in May 2024, according to Barnett’s original lawsuit, the band allegedly attempted to “weaponize these improper and baseless trademark claims” by sending Barnett warning letters “threatening litigation, including threatening to have Barnett’s use of their trademark enjoined in court, in order to torpedo Barnett’s decades-long, uninterrupted use of the FKA TWIGS trademark for Defendant’s own benefit.”
Demand for millions and name ban
The sisters are said to have “threatened to seek an injunction prohibiting Barnett from using their stage name and demanded a seven-figure sum to drop any claims against Barnett.”
In their own statement of claim, filed on Monday, May 11 and viewed by Billboard, the Twigs counterclaimed for trademark infringement. They argued that after the release of her album “Magdalene” in 2019, Barnett began omitting “FKA” from certain public appearances. She is also accused of “deliberately using her celebrity and the resulting media power to act in a manner designed to strengthen the public association of Barnett and her musical achievements with ‘Twigs,’ while undermining and overshadowing the reputation of the counter-plaintiffs … in these same music distribution channels.”
The indie band is seeking an injunction that would prohibit Barnett from using the stage name “FKA Twigs” and is also seeking unspecified damages for trademark infringement and unfair competition.
