Fix: Borussia Mönchengladbach signs Cvancara from Sparta Prague

Sparta Prague striker

Borussia Mönchengladbach have signed a replacement for striker Marcus Thuram (25; free transfer to Inter Milan). As the “foals” announced, the Czech international Tomas Cvancara has signed a contract until 2028. The 22-year-old comes from Sparta Prague and reportedly costs 10.5 million euros, which can increase by a further 2 million euros with bonuses.

Sparta called the offer they received from Niederrhein “extraordinary” in Friday’s transfer announcement. Sports director and ex-BVB professional Tomas Rosicky told reporters at the training camp in Austria on Thursday: “It was a very difficult decision for us. I always say that we want the team to stay together for a long time. We have important players with long-term contracts, so if someone leaves, it’s for a lot of money. These are sums that are difficult to refuse.”

With the fee, Cvancara is now Sparta’s third most expensive departure and also ranks in Borussia’s top 10 most expensive arrivals. The top scorer moved from FK Jablonec to Prague in January 2022 for €500,000, where he immediately secured a regular place. In 49 games, the 1.90 meter tall striker, who has also been linked with VfL Wolfsburg, scored 24 goals and scored seven more goals.

TM expert describes Borussia Mönchengladbach’s new signing Cvancara

TM user and Czech Republic expert Juanja describes Cvancara’s style and qualities as follows: “Although he played on the right wing in a 3-4-3 system for most of last season, Cvancara is mainly an effective centre-forward, who is good at flanks. He’s got good timing and a good header and finish. Despite its size of 1.90 meters, its top speed is not bad either. He is agile, can shield the ball fairly well and help build up an attack in midfield, and does so more often than one might expect at first glance. He is also thorough and good at pressing.”

Cvancara is certainly not a complete player, “but he has the killer instinct in the penalty area and interesting qualities for the Bundesliga. He struggled with an injury last season which caused him not to play as many minutes in the latter part of the season. Sometimes he is also described as a somewhat problematic character: he can provoke the opponent or make an unnecessary tackle. I remember he had a frustrated reaction once when he was substituted. He still needs to work on that as a young player, but it’s nothing too bad either.”

Gladbach sports director Virkus on new signing Cvancara: “I really wanted to go to Borussia”

Meanwhile, Gladbach’s sporting director Roland Virkus emphasized: “Tomas is a dangerous striker and also has a lot of speed. Although he is still young, he has been established in professional football for some time and made the leap into the senior national team this season. He’s a very ambitious player and he really wanted to join Borussia.” Cvancara himself said: “It’s great to be here. Borussia Park is a great stadium. I can hardly wait to start training properly, to play here and also to score goals.”
