The accident happened near the municipality of Sarras, in the north of the Ardèche. The fire brigade was called around 2 p.m. to a car that had left the road and plunged 20 meters near Vernosc-lès-Annonay.
When emergency services arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. A total of 42 firefighters were called in for the rescue operation. The winding D270 motorway was completely closed to traffic.
Ravine
“A car carrying five young people from the Rhône left the road and fell about 25 meters into a ravine,” the prefecture said. According to the fire brigade, the occupants were between 17 and 20 years old.
The five young victims came from Saint-Priest, Pusignan and Cailloux-sur-Fontaines, in the Rhône department, a source at the prefecture told ‘Le Parisien’. They were part of a three-vehicle convoy “carrying a group of twelve young people,” the same source said.
A driver and his co-driver were killed during a car rally on the same departmental road in April 2022.
