The couple had also argued earlier that evening. The man then allegedly ‘jabbed’ the victim several times with a knife. After the incident, the perpetrator fled. He was caught in Romania and extradited to our country. According to the public prosecutor’s office, there was clearly attempted murder, but this was denied by the defense. “His wife had recently come over from Romania and he thought she had cheated on him. On impulse he took out the knife and stabbed her. There was no intention to kill.”
The judge agreed with that reasoning and reclassified the facts as attempted manslaughter. He was sentenced to an effective prison sentence of five years. “Given the seriousness of the case and the fact that you subsequently fled to Romania, the court considers a strict signal necessary,” the judge said.
