First official storm of this year measured in IJmuiden

An average wind speed of wind force 9 was measured in IJmuiden on Tuesday evening between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM. This makes Henk, as the storm is called, the first of 2024 and the second winter storm of this season, according to Weeronline. The previous storm was last December.

Storm Henk mainly affects the coastal areas with wind gusts of 100 kilometers per hour. Heavy to very heavy wind gusts will remain possible until the first half of the night, especially in the coastal provinces and around the IJsselmeer. On the northwest coast and on the Wadden, wind gusts can reach a speed of up to 120 km/hour.

Meteorologists speak of an official storm when the average wind speed at at least one KNMI station over an entire hour is wind force 9. An official heavy storm is defined as when the average wind speed over an entire hour is wind force 10. In a very heavy storm, the wind should blow with an average wind force of 11 for an entire hour.
