Firing ban in Westerveld: no atmospheric fires, torches or barbecue

In the municipality of Westerveld there is an immediate smoking ban. From now on, atmospheric fires such as patio fireplaces and fire pits are prohibited in the open space. By this, the municipality also means, for example, its own garden, and not just public space such as parks or nature reserves.

“We have thought about that carefully. There are many gardens in Westerveld that border on a nature reserve, or at farms with thatched roofs. The ban therefore also applies on our own property.”

The municipality of Westerveld has instituted this ban because of the permanent drought, in combination with the holiday period. The recent fire at a cemetery in Dwingeloo also plays a role in this decision.

“Nature is bone dry,” warns Martijn Pors, chief officer on duty at the fire brigade in Dwingeloo. “Most fires in or near nature reserves and on roadsides are caused by human behavior or carelessness. Think of discarded butts, barbecues or the hot catalytic converter of a car. Be sensible and avoid anything with fire, sparks or heat near nature.”

That is why there is now a ban in the open space of Westerveld on lighting by means of candles, torches and the like. In addition to atmospheric fires, fires for cooking, baking and roasting are now also prohibited. A barbecue in nature is therefore not an option. The ban is in effect until further notice from the municipality.
