The Ajax-Groningen match in the 14th week of the Dutch 1st Football League was canceled due to fans throwing torches and fireworks onto the field.

Ajax fans, who wanted to commemorate their friend who died last month at the beginning of the match, threw torches and fireworks onto the field, and the referee stopped the match.

When the fans threw torches and fireworks onto the field again after the match started, the referee and his assistants stopped the game and the players of both teams went to the locker room.

In the statement made by the Dutch 1st Football League, it was announced that the match at Johan Cruyf Arena was canceled.

Ajax Club also apologized in its statement, describing what happened as a “scandal”.

The club’s statement included the following statements:

“The spectators in the affected section of the stadium were searched. A search was also carried out, using dogs to detect fireworks, before the stadium opened and as the spectators entered. Other preventive measures were also implemented. Despite this, we were unable to prevent this situation. Of course, we will examine the camera footage to identify the perpetrators and investigate those responsible by other means. If this leads to the identification of the perpetrators, we will take the necessary action.”
