When the fire brigade from the Westhoek zone arrived on the scene on Friday morning, the residents, a family of six, had already left the house. Two adults and four children were taken to hospital as a preventive measure to check for possible smoke intoxication.
The fire probably started in the garage. The ground floor suffered heavy fire damage. The rest of the house suffered heavy smoke damage. The adjacent houses could be saved.
The city of Wervik will take the necessary steps to provide emergency shelter for the residents.
