It’s not entirely clear whether it was meant maliciously or jokingly. Either way, according to a report in the newspaper “L’Équipe”, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (36) has been left out of the squad for the upcoming league game Olympique Marseilles against Le Havre – because of a strange prank with a fire extinguisher.

According to the paper, a group of ten “excited” players were in the training center on Thursday evening. The OM team stayed there during the week for a repeated training camp. Aubameyang is described as the suspected leader of the group, who is said to have gone overboard the most.

It is said that Aubameyang caused a “happy commotion” in several rooms – probably without any malicious intent. Whether meanness or jest; Bouabdellah “Bob” Tahri, who serves as a team manager at OM, apparently took great offense to the striker’s actions. The former track and field athlete is said to be responsible, among other things, for monitoring the players’ curfews. Aubameyang appeared in his room with a fire extinguisher and sprayed the official himself as well as his bed and belongings with it. Tahri then reported the incident to the club management.

Aubameyang apologized when interim president Alban Juster and president-elect Stéphane Richard wanted to take stock of the situation on Friday. The former Dortmund player explained that he just wanted to “cause some unrest”.

The Gabonese is playing a comparatively manageable season at OM, but is still scoring goals even at the age of 36. Aubameyang scored 13 own goals and ten assists in the championship, the cup and the Champions League. His most successful season in terms of goals came in 2015/16 at BVB with 40 competitive goals. In four and a half years at Arsenal, with the exception of the 2021/22 half-season, he always scored in double figures. He scored 30 goals at OM in 2023/24 before moving to Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia for a year. He returned to Marseille in 2025/26 and still has a contract until summer 2027.
