Due to the major fire in a residential complex in the Spanish city of Valencia with four dead, 15 injured and around the same number missing, the football games planned for the weekend by the city’s clubs have been canceled. The Spanish football association RFEF has granted a request from the first division club FC Valencia, the club announced on Friday.

The team, which is currently in eighth place in the table, should have played against FC Granada (second to last place in the table) on Saturday from 2 p.m. The second division team UD Levante’s match against FC Andorra (9:00 p.m.) on Saturday was also canceled. Now new dates would have to be found.

Valencia coach Rubén Baraja said it was a very difficult moment for the city. “It’s a day when football takes a back seat, there are much more important things in life. We must show solidarity in this situation and thank all the people who helped so that it was not as catastrophic as feared,” said Baraja.

The Spanish league also announced that a minute’s silence for the victims would be held at all games this weekend. During the major fire the day before, the flames spread rapidly due to flammable facade cladding and strong winds. The entire residential complex burned down completely.
