Fire destroys farmhouse in Burum. Possibly asbestos released. ‘Went really fast’

A farmhouse on Keegensterweg in Burum was completely destroyed by fire on Friday evening. The residents and pets have left the farm in time.

Several fire brigades from Friesland and Groningen turned out for the incident. The fire brigades of Grijpskerk, Buitenpost, Zoutkamp, Burgum and Dokkum, among others, were called up. The Dokkum aerial work platform went back empty-handed. Because the farm is located on a one-way road, the car could not get there. The large water transport from Burgum was also no longer necessary.

According to fire service spokesperson Marko Kinderman, asbestos may have been released during the fire. There are also solar panels on the farmhouse. The particles from the panels did not end up far from the farm, Kinderman said. “We are now mapping that out.”

‘Went really fast’

The damage to the property is extensive. “When the report came, the fire was already out.” According to the spokesperson, it went very quickly, “despite the fact that we were on site quite quickly”. The property can be considered lost.

The fire is not under control yet. The remains of the building are pulled apart and extinguished with a crane.

The fire caused considerable smoke development that could be seen for miles around.
