A fire broke out at the zinc recycling company Rezinal in Heusden-Zolder during the night from Sunday to Monday. Mayor Mario Borremans confirms this to Belga.
The explosion occurred in the factory building on Dellestraat. Emergency services arrived on site to fight the fire. According to the mayor, there were no casualties. The exact extent of the damage remains unclear for the time being.
The Rezinal site is classified as a so-called Seveso site. This means that hazardous substances are produced, processed, treated or stored. Companies with such a classification – such as refineries, petrochemical companies and chemical factories – are subject to strict European safety regulations that are intended to prevent major accidents.
