There are a few traditional Christmas dishes that can be found on Finnish tables, but many avoid them. What do you think about these yourself?
Christmas herring and herring dishes divide opinions. Some people think they definitely belong at every Christmas, others don’t put them on their plate. Polina Niemi
We asked the readers of Iltalehti, which of the traditional dishes of the Christmas season are popularly left off many plates and from their own Christmas table.
For the majority, the most definitely mentioned dislike was the lye fish, which divides opinions, and many people do not have very warm memories of it. Another dislike was the Christmas cold salad dish rosolli. Small fish dishes, i.e. herring and herring, are also not to many people’s liking.
Not everyone likes Christmas flavors and spices. But the good thing is that even at Christmas you can eat according to your own taste. The breakfast for the Christmas meal includes any food you dislike. Polina Niemi
This is how unpleasant Christmas dishes were commented:
– Lipäkala, just the thought hurts, says the nickname Jaksu.
– Carrot box and rosolli are traditional Christmas dishes that I don’t touch. I eat fish, but I probably only choose salmon and herring, says the friend of the nickname Lihamukie.
– Brine fish does not taste good. I can taste a small piece of herring, but not to my liking. I don’t like plum cake either. Ham, boxes and other Christmas food is wonderful, comments Pirkko.
– Rosolli is one of the most disgusting foods I know. Cold and mushy vegetables combined with disgusting pickle cubes is an absolutely horrible experience. I shudder just thinking about it. In addition, as a child I imagined that the lovely pink whipped cream served with the rosolli would have been sweet, but it wasn’t! The disappointment was great. It was the only disappointment that grandma’s food ever produced.
Some people think that different boxes are the best thing on the Christmas table, others they don’t set fire to. Maarit Pohjanpalo
– Lipäkala is absolutely terrible, the smell is already there when it’s ready. Thank you, but no thanks, commented the nickname Sarde.
– A bow box! I’ve never understood the hype of this strong aftertaste. Every year I eat a teaspoon to please the rest of the group, but my taste hasn’t changed over the decades, commented the nickname Carrot box to honor!.
– Brine fish already smells so bad that I haven’t even tasted it. And I’m not going to. I like the liver box. But it doesn’t belong on the Christmas table, commented the nickname Tätsy56.
– Rosolli, because the taste of beetroot is just not pleasant, has never been and will not be on my Christmas table. The lantu box is not my favorite, the smell is just so creepy. I have tasted it, but the taste is so indescribable, so no more. I find the brine fish that many others dislike is quite neutral, it doesn’t cause disgust but I don’t enjoy it either, I can taste a small piece if it’s available somewhere, even in this case, the side dishes that cause more disgust, i.e. white sauce and potatoes, which I don’t like. The store’s ready-made gingerbread cookies are too crunchy, dry and thin, says Siiri about his taste habits.
Christmas ham is Finns’ favorite Christmas food year after year, although it also divides opinions and is not to everyone’s liking. RIITTA HEISKANEN
– A bow box! I’ve never understood the hype of this strong aftertaste. Every year I eat a teaspoon to please the rest of the group, but my taste hasn’t changed over the decades, says the name Memmu.
– Lipäkala, horror from childhood, yök!, remembers the nickname Suvi 66.
– Rosolli. Cakes with dried fruits. Mixed omelette soup, if the fruit is included (good if the fruit is picked out). Ham (only a little is good when it has just been taken out of the oven and all the fat and skin have been removed, and otherwise it must be a perfect piece of meat without white interstices, etc.), says the name Lipäkalaonpara.
– Liver box (especially with raisins) is a delicious food, one of the best. But it is not Christmas food, and it does not belong on the Christmas table under any circumstances, commented EiOoJouluruoka.
Many people start their Christmas morning with classic rice porridge. But it’s not to everyone’s taste. Mikko Huisko
– I hate lipäkala. Finns have been tormented by it for almost a hundred years. The name alone brings to mind lye, not to mention the smell (that smell of dirty socks) and the composition. It feels disgustingly jelly-like in the mouth. I still remember that smell from the Christmases of my childhood, and I haven’t teased my children with it when I was an adult, commented the nickname Sari54.
– The fish table is disgusting, comments the namesake Vintus.
– Whitefish!!!! Every damn Christmas you had to eat it like a brat. Father reasoned. that you have to taste everything, he probably didn’t remember that every Christmas it was eaten whole. Yuck. As an adult, it was never brought to my bathroom and I never put it in my mouth, recalls Elise.
– The beetroot-plough cheese box, tastes like vomit, commented the nickname Elly.
– Christmas ham, night! Liver box, night! Carrot box, yuk! Potato box, yuk! Carrot box, yuk! Whitefish, yök! Rosolli, night! Sekametelisoppa, yök!, commented on the nickname Perinteiset_jouluruoat_vaihto.
