We will definitely see Finnish sailors in the next Olympic regatta.
Racing sailor Kaarle Tapper is going to the Olympics again. Arttu Laitala
On Saturday, Finland got more countries for the Pari Olympics. First on dry land a skeet shooter Eetu Kallioinen stamped his racing passport by winning the World Championship silver in Baku and was later a competitive sailor Kaarle Tapper’s shift in The Hague.
Tapper secured a place in the ILCA 7 class at the World Sailing Championships in The Hague, Holland. The Finn was 18th and Finland 12th in the final results. The world championship was won by an Australian Olympic champion Matt Wearn.
– This place was not what I came here to get. There were quite a lot of mistakes on the track. However, in that sense, I am happy that the berth came – it was the minimum goal from here, Tapper commented in the SPV (Suomen Purjehdus ja Veneily) press release.
Last year’s EC bronze medalist Tapper also competed in the last Olympics in Tokyo. He was in the top positions in the Olympic regatta for a long time, but ended up ninth. In the fall of 2022, at the French EC regatta, he became the first Finnish medalist in his race class in 29 years.
At the World Championships, more than 40 percent of the Olympic places were awarded. On Wednesday Sinem Kurtbay and Central axis secured a place at the Olympics in the Nacra 17 class.
in the Hague competitions Monika Mikkola came close to bringing home a place as well, but he fell just one place short of it. Mikkola was 25th in the competition. The 49er FX team also experienced the same bitter fate Ronja Grönblom and Veera Hokka.
The next qualifying window opens in the fall. Land plots are still being distributed in April.
