Finance Minister Monika Heinold visits the construction site of the Lübeck Central University Library

The central university library of the University of Lübeck and the Technical University of Lübeck is being modernized with around 8.5 million euros from the infrastructure program IMPULS. In addition to increasing the number of student workplaces to a total of 580, the facades of the building are being renovated in terms of energy efficiency. Finance Minister Heinold found out today. March 4, together with the President of the University, Prof. Gabriele Gillessen-Kaesbach, and the President of the Technical University, Dr. Muriel Kim Helbig, on site, about the construction project.

Finance Minister Monika Heinold: “Energy-related renovation is a key to success on the way to a climate-neutral future. As a state, we are setting a good example: we have so far invested more than 50 million euros in energy-related refurbishment measures. A further 230 million euros are available in the coming years. New buildings are built by the state according to the latest sustainability standards. Appropriate funds must also be made available for this in future financial planning.”

President of the Technical University of Lübeck Dr. Muriel Kim Helbig: “The library is and will remain the heart of our campus. Especially with increasing digitization, we need modern workplaces and places for exchange. We are very grateful to the state and private donors for their support. It gives our students the much-needed freedom to think.”

President of the University of Luebeck Prof. Gabriele Gillessen-Kaesbach: “For the more than 10,000 students at the University of Lübeck and the Technical University of Lübeck, the Central University Library is an important and popular place of learning. Energy renewal by the country is a crucial step in modernization. The campaign #bibaufmöbeln for the renovation of the interior is currently running. With the support of foundations and civil society, changing working and usage habits are to be taken into account and a state-of-the-art place for learning and working is to be created that meets the needs of the students.”

The state of Schleswig-Holstein will bear the modernization costs of around 8.5 million euros. As part of the modernization, the interior of the library will also be renewed. The “bibaufmoebeln” campaign, which is jointly supported by the university and the technical university, is intended to raise additional funds for the modernization of the interior of the central university library. The crowdfunding measure has so far collected around 390,000 euros. The library still needs almost 300,000 euros to cover the total costs for the interior design. About the site www.bib-aufmoebeln.de donors can make a contribution. Among other things, the donations are used to modernize workplaces, group rooms and the computer pool as a place for digital learning and to create workspaces for people with disabilities.
