The Alpe d’Huzes has raised almost 19 million euros this year. The organization reported this this Monday. In June the counter still stood at 18 million euros, but almost 750,000 euros have been added in the meantime.
Last summer, more than 1,200 people from Brabant took part in the annual event. Six times they cycled or walked up and down the Alpe d’Huez in France to raise money for cancer research.
The proceeds are more than 2 million euros higher than last year, but the record of 2012 was not broken. Then 32.1 million was raised. However, the event is seeing an upward trend. There were no editions during the corona crisis.
Still popular
According to chairman of the board Erik Justra, the high proceeds are due to the popularity of the event. “At the end of October, registration for the next edition was full in a record time of two weeks,” he says.
This year’s participants also included 7-year-old Evi from Nuenen. Exactly a week and a half before Alpe d’HuZes she turned seven, the minimum age to participate. And according to the organization, she was officially the youngest. She participated for her deceased grandfather Theo. “I don’t want anyone to get sick anymore,” she said firmly at the time.
