Does he go or does he stay? National player Niclas Füllkrug is currently negotiating a new contract with Werder Bremen. After a friendly against VfB Oldenburg, he spoke very openly about it.

The future of national soccer player Niclas Füllkrug is still open. “It’s going back and forth, it’s crazy,” said the 30-year-old striker about the status of the contract negotiations with his club Werder Bremen.

“There were days when we were closer and then there were days when we were further apart.” It’s “a process. I don’t even know where it will lead in the end.” But Füllkrug also emphasized: “It’s not like we have a break with each other. We’re quite normal in conversations.”

Filling pitcher coveted for strong performances

The top scorer of the past Bundesliga season spoke to Bremen journalists after a 3-1 friendly win against VfB Oldenburg. A year ago he had extended his contract with Werder until 2025, accepting a drop in salary from July 1, 2023. In the months that followed, however, Füllkrug rose to become a national player and World Cup striker. According to media reports, Bayer Leverkusen and AC Fiorentina are now particularly interested in him – and Bremen and their most important player are again negotiating a new contract with better conditions.

Werder would also give up their top scorer for a transfer fee of around 20 million euros. Füllkrug himself confirmed that the club had left him no doubts in the contract negotiations. “Which isn’t always nice to hear for me,” said Füllkrug. “But that’s the business, it’s just the other way around.”
