FIFA will stream women’s World Cup matches in the absence of a TV agreement with major European countries | Foreign football

The matches of the Women’s World Cup in Germany, England, Italy, Spain and France may only be viewed via the internet. According to FIFA, an agreement has not yet been reached with broadcasters from the five main European football countries about the broadcasting rights a month before the event. “We still prefer television, but otherwise we can also stream the duels via our own platform,” said a FIFA spokeswoman.

There has long been a dispute over the amounts for which FIFA wants to sell the broadcasting rights. For example, the German broadcasters would only want to pay about half of what the world football association wants to see in money. This year, lower viewing figures are expected because the matches in Australia and New Zealand are played at unfavorable times. In the Netherlands, the NOS has already acquired the rights.

In a joint letter, the sports ministers of the five European countries called on FIFA and interested broadcasters to reach an agreement on the broadcasting rights for the Women’s World Cup. They said they are aware of restrictions on broadcasters, but stress the importance of “improving the global visibility of women’s sport” in their countries.

The tournament in Australia and New Zealand starts on Thursday July 20 and the final is on Sunday August 20. The Orange Lionesses are in the group with reigning world champions United States (too strong in the World Cup final in Lyon four years ago), Portugal and Vietnam.
