Spain’s Aitana Bonmati has won the FIFA World Player of the Year election for the second time in a row. The FC Barcelona midfielder was honored at the gala in Doha on Tuesday evening and also won the second major individual award in world football after her triumph at the Ballon d’Or at the end of October.
Bonmati won the Champions League with FC Barcelona last May, scoring 1-0 in the final against Olympique Lyon (2-0). The 26-year-old also became Spanish champion and cup winner with Barca last season.
Final selection without German participation
The final selection took place without German participation. Only Ann-Katrin Berger was a candidate for the Goalkeeper of the Year award, but this went to the American Alyssa Naeher. All coaches and captains of the national teams as well as specialist journalists and fans were eligible to vote in the elections.
