Fierce criticism of bizarre Eurovision rejection Armin van Buuren

Armin van Buuren causes astonishment with his revelation about how he was treated by the Eurovision team of AvroTros, of which Cornald Maas is the most famous face. “Huh?!”

World star Armin van Buuren was asked to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest and therefore submitted an entry for last year’s edition together with singer Jaap Reesema. “I did submit a submission a while ago and yes, I was treated in such a bizarre way actually…”, he tells Show news.

Very rare meeting

Armin thinks that Cornald Maas and his mates are anti-social, he shows. “I didn’t even get a call back. We had a very strange meeting, sent in a song and we didn’t even hear if we got it yes or no. No, that’s not for me anymore.”

He continues: “We just neatly submitted an entry, but in the end it wasn’t us. Okay, but we then had to call someone to find out it wasn’t us. That’s very strange, when I think they really wanted me to do it, so I did. (…) I don’t think that’s quite my world.”

They don’t have to call Armin anymore. “No, that path is cut off.”

One-two

Of course, it seems that Armin, and all the other entries, didn’t stand a chance. The rumors that Mia & Dion were already chosen because of their friendship with former winner Duncan Laurence are very persistent. Now that they have flopped so mercilessly, one wonders if Cornald and his friends should not just leave.

Henk-Jaap Demoet, music composer at NPO Radio, is critical. He tweeted: “Then you have one of the biggest names in the pocket and then this.”

And one Rico: “So Armin van Buuren submits a song for the Eurovision Song Contest and just doesn’t get a response from the Dutch organization. So organizing the Eurovision Song Contest is really bad.”

Walter responds

NPO Radio 2 DJ Wouter van der Goes, who works for KRO-NCRV, responded this morning in good morning Netherlands. “I wasn’t there, I don’t know, but this is weird. Armin van Buuren is of course a big star and a very good disc jockey. This would have been a nice idea, but yes…”

CDA alderman Hilbert Bredemeijer: “One of the greatest artists in the Netherlands, right?

Wouter: “Yes, I don’t know how that happened. As for lesser-known names, I would still like to mention Duncan’s small success. That was an unknown name and he did a fantastic job, but this was also great and what is not can still come.

Opaque

WNL presenter Welmoed Sijtsma questions the Cornald committee. “Yes, but it is often a bit opaque, isn’t it? How is that going… The past year with Mila and what’s the name of the other one? Dion. They were pushed forward and then you miss the selection in advance. Wouldn’t that work better?”

Wouter: “Yes, we are thinking about that now with Mia & Dion, but with Duncan nobody had any problems with it. I think that no one benefits from making wrong decisions, not even the broadcaster that organizes it, so there must be a reason for that.”

Call Armin

Perhaps Armin still wants to, says Wouter. “The most important thing is that Armin van Buuren now indicates that he really wants to do this. He is very clear about that, so I think the people who have something to do with this also think: maybe we should call them after all.”

Ehh, no, Armin doesn’t want to be called by team Cornald anymore. He’s pretty clear about that…
