Fidan Ekiz finally knows which condition she suffers from, namely ADD, a subtype of the better-known condition ADHD. “I forget where my bike is,” says the 47-year-old presenter.
Fidan Ekiz has been flirting with her confusion in her columns for years: she makes quite a show of the fact that she often forgets things, cannot remember faces and is chaotic. The presenter has written countless pieces about it. After years, the diagnosis finally follows: she suffers from ADD, a slightly less severe subtype of ADHD.
Lost bike
ADD, that stands for attention deficit disorderis a condition in which you have a greatly reduced ability to maintain your attention. In practice, for Fidan, this means, for example, that she immediately loses her bicycle after parking. And that means she can’t go back.
The presenter writes in the Woman: “All my life I have sometimes lost control of things. I forget where my bike is, where my keys are, I quickly lose my way, have difficulty recognizing faces, mix up names, or completely lose track of time. I am easily distracted, clumsy, impulsive, hypersensitive, chaotic.”
ADD
Fortunately, Fidan now knows what causes it. “Not so long ago I found out it was ADD. Everything fell into place. (…) A psychologist said: ‘By noon you have already processed thoughts that would take a normal person all day.’ Exhausting.”
Despite this severe condition, Fidan is getting through life. “I will never forget how Hugo Borst, a guest on our talk show, saw that I was looking at the name map in panic shortly before we went live. “It’s me, Huuugo,” he joked, tapping his chest.”
“With the right guidance you function well, happily. Recognizing it is important.”
