Feyenoord did not succeed in reaching the final round of the Champions League and is playing in the Europa League this season. The formation of Robin van Persie lost the return match in Istanbul in the third preliminary round of the Tournament 5-2 by Fenerbahçe. The Rotterdammers had won the first game in De Kuip 2-1.
Tsuyoshi Watanabe headed Feyenoord in the 41st minute, but Fenerbahçe turned things around before half time. Archie Brown signed for the equalizer, after which Jhon Durán scored the 2-1. Fred made the 3-1 ten minutes after the break and Youssef En-Nesyri was also accurate. Watanabe brought the tension back in the 89th minute, but Feyenoord did not get further. Talisca put the final score on the board in injury time, 5-2.
