Feyenoord has extended the contract of trainer Arne Slot for a year on Sunday. The coach is now fixed with the Rotterdammers until mid-2025.
“In Arne we see the right man to continue to lead the first team in the coming years,” says general manager Dennis te Kloese. “He has shown to be a professional in several areas, and to cherish great ambitions in both the short and long term with a method that allows him to get the most out of his team.”
The contract of 43-year-old Slot was already extended at the beginning of this year until mid-2024, because Feyenoord indicated the option in its contract. After that, both parties entered into discussions about a longer cooperation.
Slot is in his second season as trainer of Feyenoord. The former coach of AZ led the team from Rotterdam to the final of the Conference League with often good football last season, which was lost 1-0 to AS Roma. It was Feyenoord’s first European final since the UEFA Cup win in 2002.
In their own country, Feyenoord did not surprise under Slot. The Rotterdammers were eliminated early in the cup tournament and in the Eredivisie they could ultimately not compete with champion Ajax and number two PSV. Feyenoord finished third, ten points behind PSV and twelve points behind Ajax. Slot did receive the Rinus Michels Award for best trainer in the Eredivisie in June.

Slot was convinced by ‘the unexpectedly fast success’
Slot himself also had a good feeling about his first season in Rotterdam. “Last season’s unexpectedly rapid success makes me believe that our approach can work well. I consider it a privilege to be able to do that here with a high-quality staff and excellent facilities.”
“In addition, I feel that our work is highly appreciated by both the club and the supporters. Not only because of the results, but especially in terms of the development of players and the attractive, infectious way of playing that the supporters visibly enjoy. “
Slot’s coaching career started in 2014 at SC Cambuur, where he was first an assistant and later moved on to the position of head coach. In 2017, the Overijsselaar left for AZ. There he also started as an assistant and finished as head coach. Slot was fired in December 2020 because he had held talks with Feyenoord without AZ’s knowledge.
Feyenoord qualified for the group stage of the Europa League last season and therefore does not have to play European preliminary rounds this summer. Slot’s team will start the new Eredivisie season on Sunday, August 7 with an away game against Vitesse.
